Rune Factory 2- A Fantasy Harvest Moon {PC} NDS

Rune Factory 2- A Fantasy Harvest Moon {PC} Game

The Harvest Moon series of farming sims has been a source of constant fun for a focused group of gamers for over a full decade now -- but after 10 years sowing the same seeds and reaping the same crops, those same fans were in the mood for something new. So last year Natsume responded with Rune Factory, a reimagined remix of the long-running farming formula. The game, which received high praise from critics and fans alike when it hit the DS last year, kept the traditional agricultural simulation in place, but also added in a "second half" to the gameplay -- dungeon-crawling. The resulting combination of sim and adventure mechanics made the game a winner. And that winner's back for an encore.

Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon is the new sequel to last year's Rune Factory, and offers the same half-farming, half-fighting hybrid design as its predecessor did. Almost exactly the same, in fact. And, for that matter, its storyline is pretty much a cut-and-paste -- a mysterious boy with amnesia shows up in a quaint little town and is given the gift of an abandoned farm to live and work on by some generous local villagers.

And then the adventure is largely the same, too -- there are four different dungeons to crawl through, and once again each one is themed on a different season of the year. Spring, summer, winter and fall. One apiece. And the inevitable pursuit of romance is also pretty much unaltered, with a selection of non-player character young ladies whom you can woo and win as your wife, to get married and raise a family.

So, for anyone who's played the first Rune Factory from last year, it won't be very long into this experience before you realize that it's essentially the exact same game. The characters are different, the land is changed -- the surface-level features have all received a fresh coat of paint. But, underneath it all, it's the same core product. Rune Factory 2 is not so much a numeral-worthy sequel as it is just a bit-more-polished follow-up, freshly made for 2008.

That kind of thing happens a lot on the DS, so it's probably not all that surprising to anyone. And it should be an especially predicted revelation for any long-time Harvest Moon fans, who've long come to expect that drastic, major overhauls just don't happen in that series from one year to the next. But, luckily, none of this disqualifies Rune Factory 2 from being an excellent title on DS. Because the first Rune Factory was so solid, and because this follow-up doesn't fix what isn't broken, it is itself also a great game.

Your character wakes up each morning and is ready to work the fields, tilling the soil, sowing the seeds, and harvesting the ripe crops to sell for a profit. After a hard morning's work, maybe he heads off to town for the afternoon to do some shopping, or chat it up with the local single girls, or take some extra quest assignments from the village's central bulletin board.

Or maybe he blows off all of that responsibility and just heads out for a day of hacking and slashing some dungeon-dwelling monsters. That's always an option, too, as the nearby forest, mountain range and tropical island are all crawling with baddies, each one of which is waiting to meet you in combat. Or, instead of defeating them in battle, you could seek to win them over -- gaining their loyalty and taking them on as companions. Monsters you've "captured" in this way can become your partners in future battles, or can even be put to work tending to your farm while you're away enjoying the local town festivals.

The point to impress is that the Rune Factory design is full of depth and options, with so many things to see and do that you could easily find yourself playing it for 20 hours or more. If you get invested in the storyline, too, you'll find the available length especially satisfying -- there's a twist halfway through the plot that we won't spoil here, but extends the appeal of the overall experience quite a bit. Overall, this kind of addictive adventure is an excellent return on your investment of 30 bucks.

Pokemon light crystal version {PC Game}

Pokemon light crystal version {PC Game}
New region: Zhery - New Leaders and Elite Four - New Rivals - Pokémon of all Regions (Johto, Kanto, Hoen, Sinnoh) - New way to travel between areas - All Pokemon Legendary - All new sprites - All new events - All new tiles - New final event: Pokemon World Championship!

Pokemon Light Platinum Ratings

Overall Graphics Sound Addictiveness Depth Story Difficulty
Average User Score 9.6 9 8.3 9.4 9 8.7 6.5
grim creaper's Score 9.4 9 7 9 10 8 6

I have nothing better to do so I guess I'll write a review for this game.  I'll start of with describing the graphics.

I rated the Graphics as a 9 because compared to a majority of the other games, their pretty decent.  Most of the hacks I've played use very similar graphics, and it makes for a semi-boring game, but the graphics on here at least make the game play a bit more interesting.  I don't really pay attention to shades or what different tiles are so I can't really give this section a great review... The reason I didn't rate this section as a 10, is because the graphics are still a little bit buggy.  I remember in one town, there was a building where it would look as if you're standing on the roof instead of behind the building.

Sound... I rated this a 7, because as far as I could tell it just copied the music of the gba games.  Not that the sounds on the gba games are bad, but after playing the Pokémon series for countless years the sounds get old after awhile... I would have liked to see an upgrade to the sound in this hack, but extra content added makes up for everything.  Besides, I fast forwarded for most of the game.

Addictiveness... It's a fairly addictive game.  Anybody who has played and beaten Pokémon Emerald will enjoy this game.  It's kind of like the Gold/Silver/Crystal versions combined with Emerald.  There's not much to do after you beat the World Championship...  But there is an entire second region, complete with 8 gyms and a new, stronger elite four to beat.

I rated the story as an 8 because it's not much different from the typical Pokémon game.  Set out on a quest to beat Gym Leaders, get badges, fight your rivals numerous times, beat the Elite 4, become the champion... All the while attempting to stop a gang of villains from accomplishing their sinister plots.  However, Team Steam had a new goal compared to the other villains in the gba games, and there's an entire second region to explore, so that's why I rated this an 8.

The Depth category of this game is DEFINETLY rated a 10.  This game clearly took a long time to make.  The elite four of the second region seems like a more powerful version of the first regions elite four... But they have a few different Pokémon on their teams.  The world championship has 7 rounds and can't be healed in between them... There are a ton of rivals in this game, I think at least 3 or 4.  The gyms are all unique, with new layouts and customized teams.  Pokémon are available from all generations, including every possible legendary known to man (Although a majority of them can only be caught after defeating the second region's elite four)...  Can't really think of anything else to add to this category.  It took me 2 days of nearly non-stop play to actually beat this game.

As for a little side note I'd like to add... This game is without a doubt worth looking into.  The only downside is it has a tendency to glitch up if you use the in game save and reset your game...  I would recommend sticking with save states, I never had a single issue with this game.  The only glitches I encountered were beneficial ones (Nearly unlimited masterballs, a way to rematch one of the trainers, etc.).  Oh, and several towns in the second region can't be flown to, even after you visit their Pokémon Centers.
